Baume & Mericer
Baume and Mercier - A History
Baume & Mercier (also known as Baume et Mercier) is a famous watchmaking company that dates back to the 19th Century. Starting out as marker of elegant pocket watches, the company soon blossomed into a world renowned creator of chic and classy watches.
The company's humble beginnings can be traced to 1834 when the Baume family established the “Frères Baume”, a trading entity, in the mountainous regions of the Swiss Jura. The founding fathers were Louis Victor and Pierre-Joseph-Celestin Baume who were already respected names in the watchmaking business.
The company made quick progress in their field. In 1844, Joseph Célestin Baume expanded the business as he developed contacts in England. It was not long before their watches became a brand name in Europe.
While the company made rapid strides in the watchmaking business, there was soon to be an event that would consolidate their name as a skilled creator of high-quality watches. The event in question was the timely meeting between William Baume and Paul Mercier at a Genevan watch and jewelry in 1912. The result of this meeting was the formation of Baume and Mercier in 1918.
Since then, Baume & Mercier has consistently maintained their good name as a leading name in the business. At the same time, they have set major trends while creating artistic watches of the highest standards.
Some of their landmark models include the Marquise watch, the Riviera design, the durable Hampton model as well as the elegant Vice Versa. The Riviera is one of their most popular designs. Praise for this sports watch includes a claim dating back to the 1980s. According to this story, a Riviera watch was attached to the wheel of a BMW M1 prior to the Le Mans race. It is claimed that the watch withstood heat, weather and speed of the race and continued to tick away perfectly even after the race.
