Jaeger LeCoultre
Jaeger-LeCoultre (JLC)
Jaeger-LeCoultre's humble beginnings can be traced back to 1833. It started out as a small workshop in Switzerland, set by Antoine LeCoultre with the aim of manufacturing high quality watches.
Antoine LeCoultre was revolutionary watchmaker, whose brilliant findings is reflected in this innovative timepieces. He invented the milionometer in 1844. This was a progressive deice that measured a millionth of a millimeter. This was of course a great advancement in maintaining precision and timekeeping.
He was also the genius beyond the key-less watches (aka crown winding system). Basically, he came up with a system that abolished the use of keys for winding up watches.
The creation of the Manufacture itself was revolutionary. This was the name given to the workshop where by it became the converging point for all aspects of manufacturing. The Manufacture continued to set trends, in true LeCoultre style, ultimately setting the world record for the thinnest crown winding pocket-watch movement in 1903. Another of their brilliant inventions included the world's smallest mechanical pocket watch during the years of the Great Depression.
On that note, it should be pointed out that this very invention was a result of the creation of the Jaeger-LeCoultre brand itself. Parisian Edmund Jaeger was trying to make ultra-thin watches and, Antoine's grandson, Jacques-David LeCoultre rose up to the challenge. The result was the birth of a leading name in watchmaking.
A number of Jaeger-LeCoultre models are renowned to this day. These include the Duoplan watch, Reverso and Uniplan. They were legends in their own right, boasting finesse and exquisite artistry.
