Longines
Longines
Longines watch is a luxury Swiss brand that is associated with the sports and aviation industry. In addition to this, the company itself was renowned as trend-setter in its field.
Dating back to 1832, Longines was set up by Auguste Agassiz in St. Imier, Switzerland. The company bloomed to become one of the leading names in the watchmaking business.
The two areas that welcomed Longines as progressive devices were sports and aviation fields. For instance, such were the high standards of Longines that they were used as the official timekeepers of the Olympic games in the late 1890s. Given their importance to this field, it comes as no surprise that they introduced the world’s first electronic timing system for such events. There was of course the groundbreaking move to introduce screen time display for live televised events.
Longines was also a brand favorite in the aviation industry. In the 1920s they were the major supplier for airplane timekeeping devices. Some of the famous events that involved Longine watches were Charles Lindbergh's trans-Atlantic crossing of the late 1920s and Collyer and Mears' record breaking trip of the same period.
Other noteworthy feats include production of the world’s thinnest electromagnetic watch and the Ultra-Quartz, the world’s first cybernetic, electronic quartz watch.
Longines models continue to be top favorites among collectors and consumers. The world's very first square watch, the Hour Angle Glass flyers watch, is one such example. The Weems Navigation Aviation is another classic and this rare item is much sought after.
