Omega - A Brand and an Icon
The Omega watch is a popular luxury item that boasts a track record of excellent craftsmanship and elegant design. It has made major contributions to the sports and aviation industry. In the past few years, the watch also gained prominence as it became the accessory of choice for famous celebrities.
Omega started out as a small business in Switzerland during the late 1840s. The founder was Louis Brandt who put together precision pocket watches from parts provided by other craftsmen in the area. After his death, his sons, Louis-Paul and César, restructured the business to maintain quality control under one roof.
Initially, the brothers named the company “Bienne” in 1880. They changed the name fourteen years later and revamped the company image by calling it “Omega”. Incidentally, Omega was the name of watch movement calibers used in their timepieces.
The Brothers
When both brothers died in 1903, the business had bloomed to become renowned watch manufacturing company. The business was taken over by Paul Brandt who continued the expansion process. Soon enough, Omega merged with Tissot and this resulted in the formation of parent company SSIH (Société suisse pour l'industrie horlogère). The SSIH group made rapid strides in their field, so much so that they became the third largest producer of luxury watches.
Omega watches are coveted by a number of different industries. Due to the high-quality of the Omega watches, they were a favorite in the sports field. In fact, these watches were official timekeepers at least 21 Olympic Games.
NASA is another big supporter of Omega watches. In 1965, the Speedmaster model was picked as the official chronomter for NASA. And apparently, when Niel Armstrong took that historic leap, he was wearing an Omega, making it the first watch on the moon.
